The app requires precise location (GPS and network-based) permission at all times, even when the app is in the background, for its primary functionality of contact tracing to work.
- Background location permission is necessary to use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to advertise/scan unique random device IDs to/from other GoCoronaGo apps.
- GPS-based location permission is used only when explicitly opted-in under the Settings of the app.
The app uses the Camera permission to scan QR codes indicating specific locations at your host institution. This permission is optional.
Data Collected and Usage
This app is designed for COVID-19 response. Any personal and sensitive data that is collected will only be used to support COVID-19-related efforts or epidemiological research.
We periodically record a unique random device ID assigned to your device by the app, the unique random IDs of other nearby app devices or beacons that broadcast their IDs using Bluetooth along with their RSSI values, and the timestamp. This is collected even when the app is in the background. We do not use Bluetooth to pair with other devices.
- This is used to build a Bluetooth-based contact graph, which is used to identify primary, secondary, etc. contacts from a COVID positive app user during contact tracing.
- This is also used to provide proximity alerts and social distancing scores as preventive measures for COVID mitigation.
If you explicitly opt-in, we collect GPS-based location in the background.
- This is used to display an aggregate heatmap of other app users who are sharing their GPS-based location in your neighborhood during the last 24 hours, to help identify crowded regions to avoid.
- This data may be used during contact tracing.
We collect data encoded within QR codes when users manually scan a QR code. We do not collect the image from the camera.
- This data may be used during contact tracing.
The COVID-status reported by a user through the app or by the user’s host institution may be collected.
- This is used to initiate contact tracing, and to display the COVID status of the user in the app.
If you optionally share it, we collect your phone number. Sharing the phone number is required to initiate contact tracing by a COVID positive user.
- This is used to re-install the app without the need for an invitation code.
- This may be used to contact a COVID positive user, and primary, secondary, etc. contacts during contact tracing.
We periodically collect device telemetry such as Bluetooth and GPS status and battery level. The phone make, model and Android OS version are collected at the time of registration.
- These are used to identify any problems in the operation of the app.
Data collected (except phone number) may also be used for epidemiological research, such as distance estimation using Bluetooth and epidemiological network modelling. Use of data for research will additionally be governed by research ethics guidelines.
Data Sharing and Retention
Data may be shared with your host institution which provided the Invitation Code to install the app, or as required by applicable Government of India (Central and State) laws, rules, regulations, notifications or court orders. Aggregate and non-personally identifiable data may be reported in research publications and technical reports, which may appear in the public domain. Other than these, the data collected will not be shared with any other third parties.
Phone number data, if collected from the app, will be deleted within 3 months of last uninstalling the app. Data collected that are not personally identifiable may be retained in perpetuity, or as applicable under law and research ethics guidelines.
COVID-19 Response and Mitigation
The app is designed to assist with COVID-19 contact tracing at the institutional-level. The random device IDs advertised and scanned by the app using BLE indicates contacts between app devices . If your host institution finds that you are COVID positive, or that you came in contact with someone who is tested positive, they may use the contact data collected from the app as part of their contact tracing protocol for COVD response and containment.
In addition, the app uses Bluetooth contact data and optional GPS-based and QR code-based location data to provide proximity alerts, density heatmaps and social distancing scores to help you take precautions and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
